Typhoid : A patient may suffer from typhoid when food or water contaminated  with the salmonella typhus bacteria is consumed. Shellfish, vegetables, milk and contaminated milk products are some of  the common causes of  the infection. Some carriers of  the disease may not show any symptoms, but may spread the disease to others.

Severe headache, continuous high fever, nausea, loss of appetite are some of the symptoms of  typhoid. The patient may also suffer from meningitis. The symptoms of  paratyphoid are similar, but the fatality rate is usually lower.

Gastroenteritis : Contaminated food or water can cause gastroenteritis, which may be fatal for infants and elderly persons. There is no effective treatment. Abdominal cramps and pain are the most common symptom of  gastroenteritis.

Jaundice is usually caused by the hepatitis A or E virus. Close contact with an infected person, contaminated food or water can cause the infection.  Since the liver is affected, abdominal pain  in the area of  the liver, fatigue, nausea and vomiting are some of  the symptoms of  jaundice.  The whites of  the eye and skin may also become yellowish in colour.
